Through 20 years in senior strategy roles - 12 at the Boston Consulting Group and 11 leading Group Strategy at ANZ Bank - Nick has come to understand and appreciate the nuances of what it takes to deliver a strategic transformation successfully. He is equally comfortable advising Boards and CEOs on major strategic decisions as he is getting into the detail of the work itself.
Working across contexts as different as banking transformation in Australia, manufacturing strategy in midwest America, and the sustainability of remote indigenous communities in Far North Queensland has taught Nick that problems which look different are often more similar than they appear - and problems that look familiar are often less straightforward than they seem. His skill lies in knowing which is which - recognising when learnings from a different context can provide new insights into the problem at hand, and when a seemingly familiar problem demands a fresh look.
Nick's technical foundation - built through his undergraduate studies in engineering and pure mathematics at the University of Melbourne and his MBA at Columbia - has remained central to his strategy work. It is the combination of that depth with senior strategic experience that allows him to operate across all dimensions of a problem simultaneously: the organisational and market context, the technical detail, the strategic implications, and the practical actions that follow. It also underpins a particular ability to build consensus - by distilling complex problems into clear, evidence-based arguments that translate into actions people can understand and commit to.

Director, NeometricMal blends legal, regulatory and governance expertise to support Boards to be effective stewards and fulfil their responsibilities. His approach arms Boards to align their understanding of their role and deliver sustained value to the organisation’s stakeholders.
During a 20-year commercial litigation career with Herbert Smith Freehills across Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, Mal advised leading organisations in telecommunications, financial services, IT, oil and gas and mining. As Partner and leader of the Dispute Resolution practice in Perth, he became increasingly curious about the substantial costs of failing to cultivate organisational alignment and the drivers of conflict.
These experiences prompted Mal's focus on relational governance. As a lawyer, facilitator, mediator and governance adviser, Mal works with Boards and Executive Teams to strengthen their relational architecture, address the causes of enterprise friction and collaborate more effectively in pursuit of shared purpose. He supports them to be more explicit about their non-negotiables and to design effective governance frameworks that build resilience.
Mal is a member of the Law Society of WA, a graduate of the AICD, a Fellow and board member of Leadership Western Australia and a trained mediator. He has considerable experience as both a Chair and Director on NFP Boards.
